Great theme, Randy! My thoughts are that goals should be clearly stated, have completion/achievement "by" dates, and should be attainable, even if a bit of a stretch. Once the goal is achieved, move the "carrot on a stick" a little further out as you set your next goal. But I think the real key is to have someone to whom you are accountable. Ask a friend, spouse, co-worker, etc., someone who cares enough about you to help you meet your goals, to "hold your feet to the fire" whenever you have a tendency to slack off. When I won't do something for myself, I am likely to do it so as not to disappoint someone else.

Great theme, Randy! In my experience, the key to successful goal setting is to set realistic, attainable goals, even if you have to stretch a bit to reach a particular goal. Once that goal is reached, move the "carrot on the stick" a little farther out, and treat each success like steps leading up to an even bigger goal. Also, accountability is important, so once the goals have been set, make them known to your "accountability partner." That doesn't mean to publicize them for the whole world to see, but enlist the help of a spouse, friend, co-worker, or other person who will be an encouragement for you to reach your goals.

My thoughts:

1: if I have the knowledge and expertise to reach my goal, may it even be huge - yes, I do believe I will reach it. It just might take a lot of time to get there.

2: If I really set a weak goal, which isn´t very attractive due to being small - I will do & reach it once it is part of a bigger one. As a single one, no, I probably wouldn´t go for it, I guess. It really depends on if it changes something in life - or not.

- which is how my current (automatic) thought-pattern runs -

Great post Randy as this is one I sometimes struggle with. I do set big bold goals...goals that get my blood pumping just at the thought of achieving them. But the tendency is to have doubt afterwards in how they can really be achieved. I can't set incremental or meek goals as those don't even give me reason to work harder. So in the end I start adjusting my goals slightly to those that are a stretch but I think I can achieve. I know I need to stay the course and stay focused on the original huge goals. Looking forward to your feedback on this and how you go about goal setting.
By the way, with all that said, I have huge strides being made over the last couple of years. Getting ready to go pash cash for one of my dream cars this wekeend!

Soooooo true! One of the biggest lessons you've helped me focus on, understand, and finally implement is the amazing power of belief. This shift in mindset (I've had belief in certain areas, but needed to gain confidence and enough self-worth to apply it in other areas that I always "believed" were for other, successful people), has had an enormous, life changing impact on me.

It's fascinating, several months ago, I wrote in a comment on your blog about the belief/self worth/development work I was doing, and gave some examples of what my life looked like just a few short years ago (I was a valet parking cars at a restaurant 5 days a week, making about 18k a year), and what I intended to accomplish with my new life and new mindset - there were some pretty lofty goals. But the reality is, they are all coming into focus and are at varying stages of realization. These included producing a tv show (of which I have zero experience in), which is now being shopped to networks; writing a book (which I'm currently outlining); creating a super successful business (which is going fantastically, I've had to hire my first full time employee - our goal is to do 200k this year); expanding and becoming more successful in my musical career (a Cee Lo song I played drums on just won two Grammy's!); and there's lots more good stuff cookin'! I sincerely hope this doesn't come off as bragging or being overly self congratulatory (that is SO not my intention), I just wanted to share my personal experience, and how this work of developing ourselves is the most important work we can ever undertake.

Jim Rohn famously said: "If you work hard on your job you can make a living, but if you work hard on yourself you can make a fortune!" Man, I'm not sure if there have ever been truer words spoken.

So yeah, I'm a big believer in belief! If we do our work on ourselves (and man, I'm a major work in progress!!!) consistently, and we create a new, more powerful mindset, anything is truly possible!

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Henry Ford that speaks directly to the power of belief: "The man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can't are both right."

Thanks RG for all the support, reminders, wisdom, insight, love and direction you share with us all! This is looking to be an epic 2012!!
